Bocas del Toro is located in the northwest of the Panamanian Caribbean, and has 7 main islands, 52 cays and more than 200 small islands. The archipelago separates Almirante Bay and the Chiriqui Lagoon from the Caribbean open sea.
Thanks to its proximity to the Costa Rican border and being the most popular beach destination in Panama, Bocas del Toro attracts thousands of travelers every day from different parts of the world.
Bocas del Toro has approximately 8,000 inhabitants of diverse cultures: Spanish, indigenous, Afro-Antillean immigrants from the West Indies, mostly English speakers, as well as Germans and North Americans.
A wealth of Water and land-based activities
Zapatilla Cays
Located six miles off Colon Island are two deserted islands each about a mile long and ringed with crystal clear sandy waters. They are part of the world-famous Bastimentos Marine Preserve.
Imagine a day of being Robinson Crusoe, wandering the shores beach combing for exotic shells, hardly a soul insight, relaxing in the shade of thousands of palm trees, and snorkeling in water so clear that visibility is fifty feet! Pitch your lounger in the shade and open your icebox and relax.
E-Bike Adventures
E-bike adventures on Isla Colon are a popular way to explore the island, with companies offering Ebikes rentals for self-guided tours to beaches like Boca del Drago and Bluff Beach. These tours provide an eco-friendly way to see the island’s natural beauty, wildlife, and hidden spots, including trails and beaches that are not accessible by car.
Bastimentos Island
Located tree mile from our hotel is Basimentos Island, the largest of the Bocas Islands.
It is like all the others (except Colon which has one road) in that it has no roads and is sparsely populated with rainforest down to almost all the shores. The shores of Bastimentos Island feature several miles of sandy beaches perfect for a picnic or sunset stroll.
Surfing
It is an understatement to say the snorkeling here in Bocas del toro is spectacular. Like a giant aquarium, exotic clouds of tiny colorful reef fish up to abundant large pelagic fish patrol the slightly deeper water (15 feet plus). Do not be surprised to see a turtle cruising by or a playful dolphin skipping by or a big Amberjack cruising through.
Scuba Diving
Bocas del Toro offers beautiful scuba diving with a variety of sites, including coral reefs, shipwrecks, and marine life. Notable locations include the shallow, protected reefs of the Bastimentos Marine Park, wrecks like the Pandora sailboat and the Mayday plane wreck, and more advanced sites such as Tiger Rock.
Kayaking
Kayaks are available for a nominal rent. We can arrange for single and double-seater ocean kayaks. There are literally miles upon miles of calm waters to explore right from our beach, featuring crystal clear waters, (averaging 82 degrees year round!) with abundant coral sandy beaches, mangroves, and tiny islands, all in waters that are mostly up to fifteen feet deep.
Take an ice box with snacks and refreshments and lose yourself in the beauty of it all!
